Word of the Week  >  KNOW WHERE YOU ARE HEADING

by Joyce Sibthorpe

“Jesus never lost sight of where he was heading..”  Hebrews 12:2 (The Message)

Recently I have been bombarded with accounts of human failure, gross sin, deception etc. etc. I have felt a great weight of sadness, particularly for those who are left to “pick up the pieces” and keep going. It hard not to feel very disappointed.

I was helped by reading Hebrews 12 in The Message.  “When you find yourselves flagging in faith, go over that story again, item by item, the long litany of hostility he ploughed through. That will shoot adrenaline into your souls!”

While Jesus was here on earth, he was constantly confronted by those who let him down, failed, messed up – I found myself reflecting on this…...

His own family lacked understanding – His disciples had little knowledge of what he was really here to do and what load he was carrying – His closest friends understood more, but failed to stand by him when he most needed them – Some betrayed and others denied him, self preservation caused some to run away – and Jesus did not stand in judgement on any of them – that’s amazing!

The crowds were fickle, cheering one minute and baying for blood the next. The religious people were jealous and vindictive – even Pilate could see that.

What was the effect of all this? The loneliness inside pushed him into the presence of the only one who fully understood, could comfort, strengthen and encourage – to his Father, the one who is gracious and merciful, will never abandon, and in whose presence perspective returns. He will repeat his promises and encourage us to press on.

Heaven is urging you on, crowds of witnesses are shouting, “Keep going, keep believing, keep proclaiming - Jesus - the only answer, the saviour, healer, deliverer, strong tower. We have an appointed task “ Go – and keep going, don’t lose sight of where you are heading!"
