A few days ago, I was walking around my garden, during one of those brief moments, when the rain had stopped falling, and the sun was trying to break through the clouds. To my amazement, I was greeted by a splash of life and colour as the wild cyclamen, planted in the shade under trees, had burst into life. How did they do it? With all the adversity of this summer, how have these delicate plants survived?
I began to realise that these beautiful flowers have been designed to grow in the shade, in poor soil, with little need for sunlight. The creator God has placed within this plant the power to thrive under adversity. This led me to think about the amazing power that God has placed within those who are “In Christ Jesus”. When Christ comes to live in us, he gives us the power to thrive in adversity. His energy enables us to live in joy and victory, despite the pressures and problems that may surround us.
Romans 8:11 says, “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit, who lives in you." Wow - We are indwelt by the same power that raised Jesus from the dead!
Paul spoke to the believers in Colossae and said, “For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is head over every power and authority.” (Colossians 2:9-10) You have been given the ability to exercise authority over everything that the enemy, and life’s circumstances, throws at you.
So today, be a wild cyclamen, thrive in adversity, shine out of the storms and realise that – “the one who is in you is GREATER than the one who is in the world.”
