Some years ago, two people were travelling by train from West Cornwall to Plymouth. It was in the days of compartments, and conversations between strangers seemed to happen naturally.
One, a lady Ruth explained she had an appointment in the hospital – she was having radiotherapy to treat cancer. Her fellow passenger, a man, wept as he told of his daughter who was also being treated for the same condition, “But you seem so full of peace,” he said, “but I’m so afraid!”
Ruth then spent the journey telling him about Jesus and how he was with her and the source of her strength. The man was a specialist in the treatment of dry-rot and happened to be the consultant we had engaged to help attack a huge dry-rot problem in the house where we lived in Truro. It came to light that he was working with us and as the train passed through Truro he said, “They have an enormous problem, but they have what you have – peace – radiance – what is it?”
The next time we saw him he recounted this conversation on the train and commented again on the peace that was so visible in our friend Ruth. We again were able to tell him the source of peace and encourage him to meet Jesus personally.
Peace is a supernatural gift – it is beyond understanding – it comes with the presence of the Prince of Peace. If you are a believer in Jesus – you will have it.
In the troubled days in which we live, with economic pressure and much fear, your peace can be like a radiant light that causes people to ask what is it about you – why are you so peaceful? Take the opportunities that present themselves. People are desperate to find “peace” and marvel when they see the real thing – not in the absence of trouble – but in the midst of it.
Psalm 34:5 says, “Those who look to him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”
