Word of the Week  >  GAINING PERSPECTIVE

by Charles Sibthorpe

Joyce told me this morning that since we returned from holiday at the end of June we have entertained 28 people in our home. Most have stayed, some have just come for meals; children have been constantly bouncing on the trampoline and we have talked and talked. We have been dealing with the sadness of death and the joys of spending time with family, friends and our grandchildren.

It has been physically and emotionally demanding, there has been little time for quietness or time to read and pray, but God is good.

In all the busyness, I have on most days managed to read a psalm, and it has constantly struck me that David’s life seemed even more stressed than ours. His enemies were constantly attacking, he was battling with sickness and fatigue, and yet the greatness of God shines through.

Here are a few quotations that have helped to give me perspective on all that has been going on around us here:

“The Lord is a refuge for the oppressed, a stronghold in times of trouble. Those who know your name will trust in you, for you, Lord have never forsaken those who seek you.” Psalm 9:9-10

“I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer.”  Psalm 18:1-2

“Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm.”

Psalm 20:7-8

“Surely goodness and mercy shall follow (pursue) me all the days of my life.” Psalm 23:6

“I am still confident of this: I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.” Psalm 27:13-14

Step back from the demands of today and gain a fresh perspective on life.
