Word of the Week  >  REBUKE

by Charles Sibthorpe

Can you receive correction? Can you handle a rebuke from someone you respect? Can you hear truth about yourself, even from someone your find it hard to respect?

If you can – then you can change – you can become a transformed person and there is no limit to what you can become. If you cannot – you will remain stuck with what you now are.

Can you give a rebuke? Do you love your brother enough to speak the truth into his life? If you can rebuke without rancour, or to score points, you may be doing your friend the greatest favour.

These are many scriptures that contain the word “rebuke”.  I find many of these incredible, and I want to be someone who can receive a rebuke, and change. I also want to have enough love and courage to give a rebuke, and trust and believe that it can be creatively life changing.

Here are some of those scriptures

Proverbs 28:23  “He who rebukes a man will in the end gain more favor than he who has a flattering tongue.”

Psalm 141:5  “Let a righteous man strike me—it is a kindness; let him rebuke me—it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it.”

Proverbs 9:8  “Do not rebuke a mocker or he will hate you; rebuke a wise man and he will love you.”

Proverbs 15:31  “He who listens to a life-giving rebuke will be at home among the wise.”

Proverbs 19:25  “Flog a mocker, and the simple will learn prudence; rebuke a discerning man, and he will gain knowledge.”

Ecclesiastes 7:5  “It is better to heed a wise man’s rebuke than to listen to the song of fools.”

Why is this so important? Jesus said, “Then you will know the truth, and the trust will set you free.” (John 8:32)  Paul says in Romans, that it is God’s purpose that we should be conformed to the likeness of his Son. That means that I need to constantly be willing to be challenged and to change.
