Sometimes, when I read Ecclesiastes, I feel that Solomon wrote it on a rainy Monday morning after a sleepless night! However, this time I saw something completely different.
In chapter 8 verse 15, he says, “So I commend the enjoyment of life, because nothing is better for a man under the sun than to eat and drink and be glad. Then joy will accompany him in his work all the days of the life God gives him under the sun.”
Work is a blessing! The first thing that God gave to Adam was meaningful work in the Garden of Eden. It was not meant to be a burden or a drudge. What is your attitude to your work? Is it a burden or a joy? In an earlier part of Ecclesiastes we are encouraged, “to find satisfaction is our toilsome labour under the sun..” Those who have suffered unemployment know that it is not a blessing. So today, thank God for your work, go there with joy and thanksgiving, don’t moan about your boss, but infuse your workplace with gratitude and contentment.
Contentment is a blessing! Chapter 5 verse 19 says, “Moreover, when God gives and man or woman wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work – this is a gift from God.”
Paul affirms this, when his says to Timothy, “Godliness with contentment is great gain.” (1 Timothy 6:6)
We are living in a society which is full or negativity, criticism and complaining. If we are among those who know God, who have received Jesus and in whom Christ lives; we are blessed, we have joy and should be at peace – so let us be those who spread an atmosphere of thanksgiving, joy and contentment wherever we go!
