What do you do when someone says, “Please help me, pray for me?” Be honest, it’s easy to think we know what to do, how to pray. – however, that is the very reason we don’t see the answers we hope for!
Moses was surrounded by rebellious hurting people, dying from snake bites, and who were desperate for Moses’ help. They cried out, “We have sinned ….pray that the Lord will take the snakes away from us.” (Numbers 21:7) It would have been very easy for Moses to think he knew what to do – command the snakes to go, hold out his rod of authority, or any number of things that had worked for him in the past. He did pray for the people, but he also listened for instructions from heaven. The unique direction he received was, “Make a snake and put it on a pole; anyone who is bitten can look at it and live.” Those who looked at the bronze snake lived!
If you try to analyse this there is nothing logical about it, no reason why it should work – except that God said what should be done – they believed and saw an amazing deliverance.
Peter found himself in a similar crisis. He was asked to come to the home of a lady who had just died. Peter entered the room, knelt down beside the bed and received instructions. We don’t hear the download from heaven, but we see the results. He did what he was told to do and Tabitha was raised from the dead! (Acts 9: 36-43)
We have no expertise, no power of our own – but we do have the ability to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying – and to obey. This is how Jesus ministered, “For I did not speak on my own accord, but the Father who sent me commanded me what to say and how to say it.” (John 12:49) Not only what, but how and when – and the results – miracles and the glory of God.
