I woke very early and took my MP3 Player to check some recordings I had made during our stay in Central Asia. We had produced weekly reports of the time there, recording incidents and impressions. At the beginning of the first recording, I had pressed the record button without realising it; Charles was trying to explain a technical point to me, to which I responded very sharply – and it was all recorded! I quickly repented and asked him to forgive me for the times when I have been quick to correct or argue a point. I am glad to report that I was immediately and unreservedly forgiven! Phew!!
However, this led me to think about a verse in Luke 6:45 which states that “out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.” And, I began to think about overflow.
There are many verses that speak about this:
Psalm 119:171 speaks of – “overflowing with praise”
Romans 15:13 speaks of – “overflowing with hope”
2 Corinthians 4:15 speaks of – “overflowing with thanksgiving”
1 Thessalonians 3:12 speaks of – “overflowing with love”
The verse that challenged me the most was Romans 5:15 “…how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to many!”
I want to so full of Jesus, that the overflow is “Jesus himself” meeting whatever need that presents itself. Isn’t that what Jesus was like – so full of his Father god that he overflowed with heavenly life and resources into every encounter.
When Paul says, “Be filled with the Spirit” - his intention is that we will be filled and filled and continually filled so that we can at all times, overflow.
