Word of the Week  >  THE HAND OF GOD

by Charles Sibthorpe

The phrase "The Hand of God" has become universally famous because of the actions of the footballer Diego Maradona, whose hand ended England's chances in a World Cup football match some years ago.

However, God's hand is doing much more profound and wonderful things every day for those who love and trust him. In Psalm 37:23-24 in says, "If the Lord delights in a man's way, he makes his steps firm; though he stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand."

When Ezra was on his way to Jerusalem to support his own people, it says in Ezra 7:4, "? he arrived in Jerusalem on the first day of the fifth month, for the gracious hand of his God was on him."

When Nehemiah went back to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem he declared, "I also told them about the gracious hand of my God upon me and what the king had said to me." Nehemiah 2:18

Hands are a wonderful part of our bodies. We shake hands to express friendship and support. We silently hold hands to show love and unity. We use our hands to stroke the face of a child who is upset. We reach out our hand when someone near is about to stumble. We lift our hands to express our worship to God.

God's hands are always being used creatively for our good. David expressed this powerfully in Psalm 63:7-8, "Because you are my help, I sing in the shadow of your wings. My soul clings to you; your right hand upholds."

Use your hands to encourage and support those around you - because God's hand is always at the ready to help you.
