Greg and Ruth Hassall, Operation Mobilisation, Oswestry, Shrops

In 2011 Greg & Ruth were sent out from Living Waters Church to work with OM, a world-wide organisation which aims to mobilise the church to extend the Kingdom of God. Greg is Finance Director at the UK HQ, and works with lots of systems, numbers and people.

Ruth is part of the Dalit Education Sponsorship Team which coordinates sponsorship of 3-16-year old children in India. Dalits belong to the lowest caste, are considered untouchable and worth less than animals, and without education they will often lead a life of bonded labour or begging and be at risk of falling into the hands of human traffickers.

Last year Ruth went with a colleague to India to visit the Education Sponsorship Team. She writes “The children are mainly from extremely poor circumstances and generally Dalits. We met a few children who had been directly saved from being sold into slavery as a result of the intervention of the schools. Girls are particularly at risk and we noticed the lower number of girls in the classes. We were told that older girls are often taken out of school to look after their younger siblings while the parents work long hours to get a meagre living, or are married very young. It was obvious that the children treated education as a privilege, and they were very happy to be in school.”

Around each Dalit Education Centre Operation Mobilisation establishes a number of programmes benefitting the wider community, such as for health and hygiene, vocational training, and micro-finance so that can income can be generated in small businesses.

Greg & Ruth have two children, Anita and Jonathan.
